Irish Foreign Exchange Student Struck by a Vehicle in Texas

A 21-year old Irish foreign exchange student was hit by a vehicle on an early Friday morning while he was riding his scooter the wrong way. He was rushed to the Dell Seton Medical College for treatment where he had an emergency surgery but succumbing to his injuries.

The accident happened along 500 block of North Interstate 35 frontage road. The deceased was identified as Mark Sands who was a third-year Computer Science student at UCD (University College Dublin).

According to the information collected by Austin Police, Mark was on a college exchange trip and was riding a Lime scooter when he was encountered by an Uber when it changed lanes to enter the Interstate-35 road. The driver of the Uber stayed at the site of accident and fully co-operated with the Police.

To raise money for his medical expenses, funeral and his family’s travel charges from Ireland, a GoFundMe page was set up. After Sand’s death, his mother commented on the page and expressed how the support from everyone has been overwhelming to them. She further updated about his organs that were donated along with the U2-Elevation song that was very special between Mark and her and how she was supposed to do their goofy dance on this song on his wedding.

The fundraising campaign page was filled with heartfelt messages from his friends and his loved ones. The campaign has collected more than $34,000 of a $35,000 goal.
