A Decade Later, Survivors Remember ‘The Miracle on the Hudson’

It has been ten years since the miraculous evacuation of the US Airways Flight 1549 after being struck by the flock of Canada geese resulting in the loss of engine power where it forced the pilots in command to glide the plane to ditching in the Hudson River. The survivors look back and remember the event where they believe they had cheated their death on January 15th, 2009. All the lives on the board escaped the horrid incident and were rescued with few serious injuries. The incident later came to be known as “Miracle on the Hudson”.

Thanks to the calm and intelligence of the air traffic controllers, ferry boat workers, trained pilot in command- Captain Chesley B. Sullenberger (Sully) and co-pilot Jeffrey B. Skiles, that all the passengers, flight attendants and pilots survived the most successful ditching of the U.S. Airways Flight 1549 in the aviation history and lived to tell their tales of that incident. For them, they still feel like it happened yesterday and can recall every detail of the fateful episode. They still remember the words of the pilot when he said ‘Brace for Impact’. As the Captain managed to avert the disaster, many passengers did not know the meaning of these words. For them, that was just another day and it was a flight like any other which changed their life inside out after the 204 seconds of its takeoff from the LaGuardia Airport in New York. With the loud thump when the geese collided with the engines, rough landing of the flight on the harsh and freezing waters of the Hudson River, the fair share of silence and screaming, the survivors felt everything. While some of them still feel the anxiety or have PTSD especially when they are taking the flights, the others are grateful for their survival and how it changed their life post the incident.

A biographical drama film named ‘Sully” was made on this historic incidence based on the autobiography ‘Highest Duty’ by the flight’s Captain Chesley Sullenberger and Jeffrey Zaslow. The movie was directed by Clint Eastwood and received positive reviews worldwide.
